My weekend started off with a hard drive crash!
In the world of creating websites, things do happen with sites, hardware, clients and just about anything imaginable. Computers are not perfect, expect things to go wrong and have a back-up policy in place.
Advise to anyone wanting to build websites for a living - exhibit lot’s of patience, back-up and don’t give up.
My trusty laptop was due for an upgrade and I did buy a ‘My Book’ external hard drive with tons of space over the weekend.
Why backup?
If you want to stay in business, keep a healthy state of mind, you will need to back up on an occassional basis. Email accounts, passwords, directories and more.
Free open source back-up tool
An excellent tool I recently came accross that is free and is open source is called Cobian Backup.
Cobian Backup is a multi-threaded program that can be used to schedule and backup your files and directories from their original location to other directories/drives in the same computer or other computer in your network. FTP backup is also supported in both directions (download and upload).
As a web developer, I really like the FTP backup function. Set it up once and back up you site(s) with the click of a button.
What to backup?
- Project files.
- Emails and email accounts
- Photos and images
- Favorates and bookmarks
- Software that you have purchased off the Internet. This one is important and saves you not having to digg around for registration keys and such.
