A blog? What do I need a blog for?
Look around, they’re everywhere now. Many multi-national companies have blogs, Google has had a blog for ages (in internet terms), a relative of yours may already have a blog, people are blogging.
Well what is a blog?
According to WikiPedia Blog entry:
A blog is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject such as food, politics, or local news; others function as more personal online diaries.
So why a blog when you’re trying to get your site indexed?
It’s all about the linking and networking factor.
Without getting too much in to detail here, but a blog will provide you and your website an outlet for others to keep in touch with your content and updates with your site.
After you have created a blog, there are a number of additional steps that will be taken in the getting indexed strategy that a blog will be required for.
So what do I write about in my blog?
Anything! Anything in regards to your site, anything in regards to your industry, anything in regards to new additions to your site.
If you website is about Alberta Real Estate Investments, then you will want to write about how the real estate market is changing in Alberta, how investors can benefit from the changes in the market, what recent news are important to visitors to the site and so on.
There are always changes and updates in hardware in the small business IP-PBX industries, so a webmaster could write about new business phone releases, company announcements, musings on VoIP in general and so on.
Within a Geothermal directory, one could post even the simplest of concepts, such as what is geothermal, how it affects you and your business or even how it affects the environment as a whole.
The webmaster for AdJingo Free Classified Ads posts on website updates, new member features, classified ads tips and more.
The point is, get a blog set up on your site and we’ll further explore how this will benefit your business or personal website.
Where to get a blog from?
There a numerous blog writting application and software tools that you can use, but I’ll put my support behind WordPress.org. This blog is written with WordPress and there are many add-ons, tools, themes, templates that you can use to customize your your blog site. Change the colors, change the look and feel with little or no programming experience at all.
Get a programmer or web developer to assist you in setting this up if you need help. A bit of FTP, PHP and MySQL database experience is required.
What about a free blog from WordPress.com?
Sure, but keep in mind that the blog is not hosted on your website, so from an indexing perspective, the free hosted blog may not provide much value to your search engine indexing and positioning strategy.
